BLACKSBURG, Va.-- Today, Luna Technologies announces major enhancements to the industry s most sensitive frequency-domain reflectometer: the Optical Backscatter Reflectometer (OBR). This failure analysis tool offers unprecedented diagnostic capabilities to the manufacturers of fiber-optic components and assemblies. Using the OBR, designers and manufacturers can peer into the heart of optical components, modules and assemblies to measure minute reflections with 125 dB sensitivity, 60 dB dynamic range and 40 micron spatial resolution.
Luna s enhancements to the OBR are designed to make the instrument more useable over a wider range of applications. Enhancements include an increase in the measurement range from 30 meters up to 300 meters with sub-millimeter resolution. The increase in length allows for the interrogation of longer and more complicated optical networks such as amplifier modules. Other enhancements include updated hardware that allows the 60 dB dynamic measurement range to be adjusted in the range from 0 dB to -130 dB, giving the OBR the largest measurable loss range of any instrument on the market. Software features that allow for easier, more intuitive data manipulation and storage have also been added.
Feedback from customers using the OBR has been positive. We re using the OBR to see things in our designs that no other piece of test equipment on the market has allowed us to see in the past, says Barry Soloway, Vice President of Engineering for Continuum Photonics, an optical switch manufacturer. The OBR has allowed us to rapidly isolate optical path losses of a fraction of a dB thereby improving optical performance margins and decreasing production test time.
The OBR comes configured with an integrated internal tunable laser source, a computer and a monitor. It is available immediately with a four to six week delivery.
